WHAT IS A 'CONCERT DE PEINTURE' Invented in 2006 by Mathias Duhamel, 'Concert de Peinture'® live painting is not at all the same formula as the usual 'performances' given by music hall artists, where the point is to seduce the audience with displays of virtuosity. A 'Concert de Peinture' is about living an instant of creation and emotion in which 2 artistic disciplines, painting and music, merge. Listening to the feelings of each other, Mathias Duhamel and the musician create a totally unexpected, free work of art. Starting from a defined theme, whatever it is, the improvisation can run over several acts, as in a two or three-act tragedy. No one knows how the story will turn out. Scene after scene, dab after dab, the artists submerge the audience with the various steps of the story as it evolves. They tell an imaginative story and convey unforeseen journeys. The true interest of that kind of show is not to wait for the final result but to be part of the event. QU'EST-CE QU'UN "CONCERT DE PEINTURE" Inventée en 2006 par Mathias Duhamel, la formule de spectacle "Concert de Peinture"® s'éloigne volontairement de la notion de "live performance" davantage associée au music-hall et destinée à séduire un public en attente de virtuosité. La formule "Concert de Peinture" se définit davantage comme un instant d'émotion et de création durant lequel l'alchimie opère entre 2 disciplines artistiques, picturale et musicale. Il ne s'agit pas de séduire mais de ressentir. En écoutant leurs sensibilités mutuelles, Mathias Duhamel et le musicien donnent naissance à une oeuvre inattendue et libre. Partant d'un thème défini, l'improvisation se déroule, telle un voyage ou une pièce de théâtre, parfois en plusieurs actes. L'intérêt est d'assister au déroulement de la création et pas nécessairement de considérer la scène finale comme l'achèvement de l'oeuvre. L'oeuvre réside dans l'instant vécu. |

EXAMPLE OF REHEARSAL Most of the time, Concerts de Peinture do not need rehearsals. Rehearsals are useful only when painter and musicians want to intensify their collaboration. The aim is not to prepare what will be played because generally this is an improvisation. Each moment and each configuration of musicians produces a different work of art. The clip shown here is an example of a rehearsal performed in 2008. In this clip you can view the setup of the instruments, the rehearsal itself, then an accelerated movie that allows you to see in a few seconds how the work is completed. EXEMPLE DE RÉPÉTITION Certains Concerts de Peinture sont donnés sans aucune répétition préalable. Quand des répétitions ont lieu, c'est davantage pour que peintre et musiciens augmentent leur degré de complicité. Il ne s'agit pas de préparer ce qui sera joué en final puisque dans la plupart des cas les artistes improvisent. Chaque moment et chaque configuration de musiciens produisent des tableaux différents. Le reportage ici montre un exemple de répétition réalisée en 2008. SIEGFRIED KESSLER International Jazz Pianist Siegfried Kessler is a legend. He played with saxophonist Archie Shepp in New York for years, as well as with many other talented musicians. But Siegfried Kessler is not only a fabulous musician, he also has an extraordinary talent for friendship. The day Mathias Duhamel and he met, they were able to work together immediately on a piano improvisation. At first, the Concert de Peinture was not on the agenda, but they decided spontaneously to do one the day after they met. It was a perfect 60-minute concert. The audience was spellbound by the musician's talent. Siegfried Kessler much appreciated this new way of merging his art with other artists. He suggested that Mathias Duhamel travel overseas and play with him in New York. Unfortunately, Siggy passed away 6 months later. You can get a better understanding of this great man on his website. SIEGFRIED KESSLER Pianiste de Jazz International Siegfried Kessler est une légende. Il a joué plus de 10 ans avec le saxophonist Archie Shepp à New York et avec beaucoup d'autres talentueux musiciens. Mais Siegfried Kessler n'est pas seulement un fabuleux pianiste, il est aussi doué d'une amitié peu commune. le jour où Mathias Duhamel et lui se sont rencontrés, une complicité est née immédiatement autour de l'improvisation au piano. Au début, le Concert de Peinture n'était pas du tout prévu mais, spontanément, Mathias et Siggy décidèrent d'en faire un le lendemain. Ce fut un concert de 60 minutes vraiment parfait, avec une assistance médusée par le talent du musicien. Siegfried Kessler apprécia cette façon d'improviser avec Mathias Duhamel et lui proposa de venir jouer un nouveau Concert de Peinture avec lui à New York. JEANNE-MARIE CONQUER International Violinist player Born in a family of musicians, Jeanne-Marie Conquer get her First Prize of violin at the age of 15 at Conservatoire National Supérieur of Paris. Solist at the Ensemble Intercontemporain since 1985, member of the Intercontemporain Quatuor, her numerous tours under direction of Pierre Boulez, David Robertson, Jonathan Nott et Suzanna Mälki took her off to Australia, USA, Argentina, Finland, Japan, Mexico, Brasil and through all great capitals in Europe. Concertist, attracted by many repertoires, she got recognition playing concerto of Alban Berg "à la Mémoire d’un Ange" then interpreting the main concertos for violon (Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Paganini, Lalo, Sibelius, Tchaïkovski). Her artistic relationship with contemporary composers (Luciano Berio, György Kurtág, György Ligeti, Peter Eötvös, Ivan Fedele, Pierre Boulez, etc.) made her recording several creations at Deutsch Grammophon studios. JEANNE-MARIE CONQUER Violoniste internationale Née dans une famille musicienne, Jeanne-Marie Conquer obtient à l'âge de quinze ans le Premier Prix de violon au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris. WILLEM TANKE Pianist Living and working in Holland, Willem Tanke is, first and foremost, a famous organist specializing in Brahms, Bach and Olivier Messiaen. From 1988 until 2000, Willem Tanke was professor of organ at Utrecht University of Professional Arts Education. He is currently professor of improvisation at Rotterdam Conservatoire. His recording of Messiaen's complete oeuvre on eight CDs has been selected as a Star Recording on the organ. For this achievement, the Société académique 'Arts-Sciences-Lettres' in Paris awarded him the Diplôme de médaille d'argent (silver medal). As a pianist, Willem Tanke developed the rolling wrist technique, a subtle way of playing fluent clusters, suggesting quarter-tones that the piano cannot normally produce (see this section on the artist's website). SAX'PHONIE Saxophones Quatuor Usually, Sax'Phonie Quatuor plays jazz or classical music from written compositions. The encounter with Mathias Duhamel was an opportunity for them to invent a spontaneous music which those talented musicians were absolutely not prepared to. But the challenge was worthy. The 2 video links in gray, herebelow, will help you to understand the artistic research during the 2 rehearsals previous the concert itself. The aim of these rehearsals was not to prepare the way artists will have to buid the painting but only to prepare the way artists will have to be aware of each other during the concert. SAX'PHONIE Quatuor de saxophones Les 4 saxophonistes qui forment Sax'Phonie sont des musiciens virtuoses qui expriment habituellement sur scène toutes les possibilités de ces instruments à vent, dans des registres classiques, jazz et contemporains. La rencontre avec Mathias Duhamel a donné lieu a un Concert de Peinture unique au profit du Téléthon 2009, dans le cadre du Collège Saint-Adrien de Villeneuve d'Ascq, en présence de Monsieur Delor, délégué de l'Association Française contre les Myopathies, de Mireille Deboudt, coordinatrice départementale, et de l'équipe locale animée par Nathalie Ledoux et Monsieur Garet. Le tableau a été offert par l'artiste au profit de la recherche contre la myopathie. DIDIER GUYOT Flautist This multivalent musician loves music experiences. He produces himself as a solist and organizes shows with many ethnic trends musicians as well. That type of concert generates sounds that everybody can appreciate because all musicians play naturally in perfect harmony. Mathias Duhamel met Didier Guyot in 2001 in Le Havre. The Concert de Peinture of this January 29th, 2010, was organized and supported by the Judo Eurometropole Masters Erima' competition, and was the opportunity for the two artists to have a nice and creative dialog on stage. DIDIER GUYOT Flûtiste Ce multi-instrumentiste est un expérimental par nature. Il alterne les spectacles en solo et les superproductions trans-ethniques dans lesquelles il réunit des musiciens de toutes origines pour créer en direct une musique où règne une harmonie naturelle. Mathias Duhamel a rencontré Didier Guyot en 2001 au Havre. MATTHIEU BUCHANIEK Cellist Matthieu Buchaniek is one of the most famous cellists of the Lille Academy of Music. His innate skill for improvisation is as impressive as his ability to hear inner and outer worlds. He frequently collaborates with Lille National Orchestra and with many other musicians, such as singer Emmanuelle Bunel, Espace Impair trio, etc. Mathias Duhamel was very impressed by Matthieu Buchaniek’s creativity when they had rehearsals at the artist's studio. Matthieu Buchaniek is taciturn but he will always find the mot juste. This private Concert de Peinture was improvised on the theme of: 'Turns and Bends'. MATTHIEU BUCHANIEK Violoncelliste Matthieu Buchaniek est l'un des violoncellistes les plus réputés du Conservatoire de Lille. Son sens de l'improvisation inné et son écoute profonde des mondes intérieurs et extérieurs font de lui un maître en la matière. Il collabore régulièrement avec l’Orchestre National de Lille et de nombreux artistes musiciens dont la cantatrice Emmanuelle Bunel, le trio Espace Impair, etc. Mathias Duhamel avait été impressionné par sa créativité lors des répétitions en atelier. THOMAS LELEU International Tuba player Thomas was only 19 years old when the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Opera of Marseille selected him as their solo tuba player. Mathias Duhamel says he was lucky to get the opportunity to play with such a young international musician, awarded several prizes in different countries (France, Luxembourg, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Russia, China, etc.). Thomas Leleu was born into a musical family: his father is a trumpeter and his brother, also a trumpeter, won the 'Victoires de la Musique Classique' prize in Paris in 2009. He plays with many famous orchestras, from chamber music orchestras to philharmonic orchestras. He is also a fine composer with an incredible list of awards (see his website). The artistic experience between Thomas Leleu and Mathias Duhamel was one of working together in a shared endeavour, and the rehearsals became intense moments of discovery for the two artists. THOMAS LELEU Tubiste international A 19 ans, il était déjà nommé sur concours tuba solo de l'orchestre philharmonique de l'Opéra de Marseille. C'est une chance pour Mathias Duhamel d'avoir eu l'occasion de jouer avec ce jeune tubiste international, auréolé de nombreux prix dans plusieurs pays (France, Luxembourg, Allemagne, Japon, Corée du Sud, Russie, Chine, etc.). Issu d'une famille de musiciens (son père est trompettiste et son frère, trompettiste également, a été récompensé aux Victoires de la Musique Classique 2009), Thomas Leleu joue dans les plus grandes formations classiques, orchestres de musique de chambre et orchestres symphoniques. UK SYLVIE REYNAERT Vibraphonist and percussionist A graduate of the National Academy of Music in Lyon, Sylvie Reynaert honed her skills working with Philippe Poncé, soloist at the Paris Opera. As a guest soloist with the Lille National Orchestra, La Grande Ecurie and la Chambre du Roy or Orchestre Flandres Wallone, she gives a great deal of time to contemporary creative work. Mathias Duhamel considers her improvisational skill and her magical dexterity to be key factors in the development of the Concerts de Peinture. More on her website. CASILDA RODRIGUEZ Accordionist Winner of the National Union of French Accordionists competition in 1977, Casilda Rodriguez developed from 1990 to 1997 in a jazz environment, creating her own 'Casilda Rodriguez Quartet'. She has been invited to play several times as a soloist by the National Orchestra of Lille. Although she generally prefers to play as an accompanist, her involvement in the Concerts de Peinture is notable for the sincerity and the emotional dimension she brings. SYLVIE REYNAERT Vibraphoniste et percussioniste Issue du Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, Sylvie Reynaert s’est perfectionnée avec Philippe Poncé, soliste à l’Opéra de Paris. ALEXIS THÉRAIN Guitarist This artist creates amazing sounds with only 6 strings. When Mathias Duhamel saw him on stage, he got the idea of setting up a Concert de Peinture with him. Alexis Thérain is such a talented improvisational musician that he can tell an amazing story starting from nothing but the slightest movement. Just listen to his albums on his website. The Concert de Peinture took place in Paris at the Hôtel California Champs-Elysées. N.B.: the painting was chosen by Eugène Wozny to grace the label of his famous wine Bordeaux Haut-Médoc Millésimé Château-Barateau 2005. See below. ALEXIS THÉRAIN Guitariste Cet artiste au talent éclectique est un magicien des ambiances. C'est en le voyant jouer sur scène avec d'autres membres de son collectif d'improvisation que Mathias Duhamel a eu envie de monter un Concert de Peinture avec lui. Alexis Thérain a le talent de partir d'un souffle de vent pour faire vibrer les premières sonorités puis de laisser une histoire se dérouler dans un mélange libre et construit à la fois. HOWARD RICHARDS Pianist Mathias Duhamel met Howard Richards in Atlanta a few days before the Concert de Peinture event to benefit Children's Wish Foundation International set up by Linda Dozoretz. The pianist astonished Mathias Duhamel by deviating a long way from his usual classical repertoire. With great panache, Howard Richards launched into a pure creation of discordant sounds and broken rhythms. This excellent pianist also composes in various styles but his favorite field is Jazz. The Concert de Peinture was recorded by CNN and broadcasted as part of an interview with Mathias Duhamel. The event had also been mentioned on NBC in another interview. HOWARD RICHARDS Pianiste Mathias Duhamel a rencontré Howard Richards à Atlanta quelques jours avant la tenue du Concert de Peinture donné au bénéfice de la Children's Wish Foundation International fondée par Linda Dozoretz. C'est en cours d'événement que le pianiste a surpris Mathias Duhamel en sortant de son registre classique habituel. Très généreusement, Howard Richards s'est lancé dans une pure création aux sonorités dissonantes et aux rythmes cassés. Cet excellent pianiste compose dans des styles assez divers, avec une fibre particulière pour le jazz. Le Concert de Peinture a été enregistré par CNN et diffusé partiellement lors d'une interview de Mathias Duhamel. LES SOLISTES FRANÇAIS String Quartet Les Solistes Français is a string quartet created by Bernard Wacheux with David Wacheux, Benjamin Bricout and Caroline Glory. Violonist and Conductor, Bernard Wacheux worked with many orchestras in Paris and Brussels before starting a career as a soloist in Germany with the Koblenz, Frankfurt and Mannheim orchestras. He undertook international tours in the USA, Africa and India. He worked for more than 10 years with Yehudi Menuhin. Bernard Wacheux met Mathias Duhamel in December 2005. He was looking for a concert hall to play Dvorak’s American Quartet before going on tour in India. Mathias Duhamel told him he could find a venue and, as a joke, the painter added he could paint the American Quartet while the performance ran. Bernard Wacheux said 'Ok, do it!'. Both had several rehearsals and Mathias Duhamel wrote his own painting part so that he could paint to the same timeline as the Dvorak music. When the concert took place at the World Trade Center in Lille, Mathias Duhamel thought that this 'live painting performance to music' would be the first and the last one. But 8 days later, a French company asked the painter to do another 'live performance to music', for an event. That's how 'Concerts de Peinture" started. LES SOLISTES FRANÇAIS Quatuor de cordes Les Solistes Français est un quatuor à cordes créé par Bernard Wacheux avec David Wacheux, Benjamin Bricout et Caroline Glory. Violoniste et chef d'orchestre, Bernard Wacheux collabora avec de nombreux orchestres à Paris et Bruxelles avant d'entamer une carrière de soliste en Allemagne avec les orchestres de Coblence, Frankfurt et Mannheim et d'autres tournées internationales aux USA, en Afrique et en Inde. Il a également collaboré pendant plus de 10 ans avec Yéhudi Ménuhin. Bernard Wacheux rencontra Mathias Duhamel en décembre 2005 alors qu'il cherchait une salle pour jouer le Concerto Américain de Dvorak avant de partir en tournée en Inde. Mathias Duhamel l'aida à trouver la salle et, sous forme de plaisanterie, ajouta qu'il pourrait peindre le Concerto Américain durant le concert. Bernard Wacheux le prit au mot et tous deux se mirent à préparer l'événement. Mathias Duhamel écrivit sa propre partition picturale tel le 5è musicien du quatuor. Le concert eut lieu au World Trade Center de Lille. Mathias Duhamel pensa que cette expérience était la première et la dernière du genre. Mais 8 jours plus tard, une entreprise française lui demanda de créer un nouveau tableau sur scène avec des musiciens. The theme was: 'Woman, Construction and Deconstruction'. Models from the 'Perfect' agency wore lace dresses designed by stylist Sarah Sumfleth who made her creations with lace produced by Solstiss.
